About the Bideford Youth Pipe Band
-
The band was formed in 1991 by a group of people headed by Pipe Major Jimmy Young. Made up of youngsters between the ages of 10 and 18, together with their teachers the band has soon grown to the popular band it is today performing all over the South West.
-
We wear the Ancient Lamont tartan. In 2000, the band were formally given permission to wear the Lamont tartan by Peter Noel Lamont of that Ilk, 29th Chief of the Clan Lamont. Traditionally only people belonging to the Lamont Clan were entitled to wear the tartan. People with the following surnames are entitled to wear the Lamont tartan:- LAMB - BLACK - LUCAS - PATRICK - TURNER - WHITE - BROWN - BURDEN.
-
Patron of the band is Lord Lamont of Lerwick, best know as the former clancellor of the exchequer Norman Lamont.
-
On November 1st 2002, the band had the privilege of playing for HRH The Duke of Edinburgh when he visited Bideford.
-
In 2005 the band travelled to Edinburgh to take part in Pipefest, where they join up with 10,000 other pipers and drummers to break a world record for the biggest pipe band in the world. - On August 7th 2010, the band organised PIPEFEST TINTAGEL. This was part of a worldwide gathering of Pipers & Drummers of which our event was the only one in England.
- In April 2011, the band went to America to play in the New York Tartan Day Parade and to visit and play in Bideford's new twin town of Manteo in North Carolina.
